DENVER BRANCH HISTORY At a meeting of the Colorado Federation of Women’s Clubs in Colorado Springs, September 21, 1921, Nellie Burget Miller called a group of women together to form a temporary organization of Pen Women. At a Poetry Lover’s Feast that evening, plans were made to assemble credentials of members and to make application for a charter for a Colorado Branch of NLAPW. In 1923, the permanent charter for the Denver Branch was received, with five charter members, including Nellie Burget Miller as the first President. She was named Colorado’s Poet Laureate in 1952 by then Governor William B. Sweet. Members of the Denver Branch strive to produce literary, artistic and/or musical works of high quality, to promote good fellowship among members, and to mutually encourage women engaged in the creative arts. Members (except for Provisional) receive The Pen Woman magazine, the official publication of NLAPW. A national roster is published every two years.
